"I Don't Believe in the Easter Bunny!"

There is no shortage of fictional characters in this world. There is Superman, Spiderman, Santa Clause, Leprechauns, the Tooth Fairy, the Fairy Godmother, the Easter Bunny, Frosty the Snowman, and on an on and on. Most of these fictional characters have provided hours of enjoyment when we were children. I mean, what little boy has not wrapped a towel around his neck to make a cape and jumped...er...flown from the couch to the coffee table? We have all benefited financially from the Tooth Fairy, and more than a few children have stayed away on Christmas Eve waiting for Santa Clause to bring them gifts.

Though we had a great time with these Characters when we were children, as we grew older we came to understand that these Characters were fictional. You know what I have found? I do not get mad at people who believe in fictional characters like the Easter bunny. I mean, take away the fact that I do not like the fact that the Easter Bunny takes away from the real meaning of Easter, and I do not mind people believing in the Easter Bunny. You know why? The reason is because I know they don't exist. I don't get angry when someone mentions leprechauns. You know why? They don't exist! I refuse to get angry about something that does not exist. You ma be wondering where I am going with this.

Here we go. I have often gotten into debates and arguments with people who call them themselves atheists. Webster's dictionary defines an atheist as one who disbelieves in the existence of God, or a Supreme Being. Now very often when I have dealt with atheists, I have noticed that they have a tendency to be somewhat hostile toward a belief in God. Though I am sure it is not all atheists, many get angry when you speak to them about God, and make it their mission in life to destroy any reference to God in the public square. They say this offends them because they do not believe in God, and don't want to have that belief pushed on them.

Well then, do they believe in Santa Clause, or the Easter Bunny? Do they believe that there are actually little green men who grant wishes and have a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow? Certainly they do not believe in these Characters? Why then are they not angry with those who espouse belief in such "beings"? The atheist might say, "Ah, but we object to belief in God because it is a lie, and it forces a system of behavior on people that they may not wish or agree with." Would it not also be true to say that the belief in Santa Clause does the same thing? How many parents have used the fictional belief in Santa Clause to "scare" there children into being good? "If you are not good, then Santa won't bring you any presents for Christmas!" What if the child doesn't want to be good? What if he doesn't believe in your definition of "good". Who are you to force your morals onto another human being? How dare you use a fictional character to coerce the simple minded masses to behave in a manner you decide is acceptable! Why, I have even heard of parents who encourage their children to write letters to Santa, and tell him what they want for Christmas. Outrageous!! To ask a child to believe in someone they have never seen, and write a letter to someone (which is eerily like praying) all in the hope of getting something. After all, we are all alone in this world and there is no Santa Clause, and the sooner we wake up to it, the sooner we can provide for ourselves instead of clinging to the hope that there is a jolly fat man somewhere with the power to bring us gifts for Christmas!

Of course I am being sarcastic. However, I do think there is ripe hypocrisy on the part of the atheist in this matter. Now why do they really get so angry when you talk about God? The truth is, that they are angry because they know God exists. The book of Romans tells us that God has placed within every man the knowledge that there is a God. The reason God angers atheists is because they are in rebellion against Him. You can put up a sign telling me that Santa Clause is watching me, but I know better. The atheist can proclaim loudly that God does not exist, but they know better. However, if they admit that he exists, then they must also admit that they may be accountable to Him, and that they may have to answer for their sin, and that is something they do not want to do. Therefore, they simply say, "He does not exist." How well the Bible says, "The fool hath said in his heart, there is no God." Only a fool would deny the truth of something that he knows in his heart to be true.

When you see the atheists filing lawsuits to remove religious symbols from the public square just remember this: they are not worried about separation of Church and State. They merely want to avoid being reminded of the truth that they have been trying so hard to ignore. They are not angry because they believe it is a lie. They are angry because they know it is true!
